My Tanning Bed Preferences

Tanning Bed Likes

Right off the bat, I want to share a few things I like most about a tanning bed.  First and foremost, I like the tanning bed to have a super good fan system.  All that light generates heat and my body tends to run hot anyway.  I cannot stand using a  tanning bed were you're sweating a puddle within 5 minutes of starting the process.  Ones that have a cooling system in addition to the fans is even better.  Plus, I like a tanning bed that lets me adjust the face vents.

I like the stand up style of tanning bed.  Besides variety, the ones I've used are higher intensity and require a lot less time than many of the lay-down type tanning bed.  I especially like the ones with a face tanner that you can turn off.  This allows me to get my extremities caught up in tan with the rest of me.  Perhaps it's just me, but my lower legs just never seem to get as dark as the rest of my body.  Someone once told me it was due to circulation.  Well the stand up tanning bed seems to help with that...at least for me.

Another tanning bed like is the ones where the bed is on an incline so that your head is higher than your feet.  They almost seem ergonomically designed to accommodate the natural curves of your body.

Tanning Bed Dislikes

I've already covered above that I dislike getting hot and sweating in a tanning bed.  That's my #1 dislike.  Another BIG dislike is taking my time to use a bed with old bulbs.  They're worn out and you spend 20 minutes to get absolutely no color.  If this happens at a professional salon, I suggest a candid conversation with the manager.  Really good places have a schedule to regularly change the bulbs in each tanning bed.

This brings me to another dislike and that is burning due to new bulbs and not being told up front.  One of the reasons I use a tanning bed is to maintain my color without burning my skin.  Even though I have olive skin and tan easily, new bulbs invariably give me a sunburn.  I insist on being told if a tanning bed has new bulbs.  Then I adjust my time in that bed down by generally a third of the amount of time I last tanned in that type of tanning bed.

Pressure points you sometimes get on your backside is another dislike.  That's one of the reasons I mentioned that I like a stand up tanning bed.

Tanning Bed Protections

I always use lotion to protect my skin when I tan in a tanning bed.  Eye protection is important, too.  One of the most important things I do is to make sure I never burn.  I slowly work up to the maximum minutes allowed rather than try to go for the max the very first time if it's been awhile since I've tanned.  I think it's important to know your own skin type and how/if you tan.  If you're fair complected, then start at a minimum time.  If that worked okay, then next time you can increase it a minute or two.  Just don't rush it.  That means if you're trying for a tanned look for an event, plan ahead and don't go for the last minute thing.
