Rare colored cross fox rescue
On October 29, 2010 at approximately 10:44am the U.S. Wildlife Removal Service office had received a call from the Pleasant Dale Park District office with the report of an injured red fox that was a little too friendly for its own good and wandering around the pre-school area during the day. Characteristics of this nature in nocturnal animals usually are signs of being sick and disorientated. With the evident risks at hand for both the fox and the children the U.S. Wildlife Removal Service office had dispatched a truck for immediate response.

The Pleasant Dale Park District maintains 137 acres of land which includes a school, athletic fields, a golf course, YMCA, fitness club and about 6 parks. Among these recreational centers, parks and facilities the surrounding area is heavily wooded with abundant Illinois wildlife to be seen. The Park District serves about 8,100 residents who reside in portions of Burr Ridge, Countryside, Indian Head Park, Willow Springs, and some unincorporated areas of LaGrange and Hinsdale.
A few days later a call came in that the fox was resting behind the preschool and looked to be injured. When the U.S. Wildlife team had arrived, the fox was observed to have a hurt left leg. With the fox hurt this made him more likely to be hit by a car, attacked or die of starvation. After an hour of hand capture efforts the fox had run off, leaving little hope it would return after being pursued. Bait was placed out to keep the fox in the area and also well fed so it could be alive long enough to be caught and rescued. After sightings had been made by Pleasant Dale Park District staff, who did not let a wasted moment go by with immediate updates, the strategy had to be changed up to more complex measures of fox trapping so another effort would not come up short again. A modified foot hold trap that functions like a traditional foot hold, yet does not hold the animal by the jaws but a noose thrown over the leg once sprung was put into use. Once the fox was located the next day the U.S. Wildlife team went into action. The fox was pursued slowly and observed. Food was placed out in various locations across a 2 acre area. As the fox moved and fed, it was constantly being observed with immediate adjustments in the capture plan. Once the fox was in an area away from the road way and comfortably feeding, the trap was set out a few yards away with more bait along with another baited cage trap. With the park districts Director Katherine Parker, U.S. Wildlife Removal Service Operations Manager Mario and wildlife technician Rick Dys watching in suspense the fox made his way over to the cage trap. Circling around and even going as far as neck deep but was just too smart to commit to entering. Then the worst happened. The injured red fox lost interest and begin to walk away, going off a few yards into the thick of the woods, playing in the leaves and acting as if no one was around.

The fox was then circled and chased a little closer to the baited trap where it begin eating the bait. As every one again was watching in suspense the fox finally stepped onto the trigger and was CAUGHT!
Once the trapped fox was ensnared the noose was immediately taken from his foot and he was placed into a transfer cage within minutes. The 9 day chase was over and the fox would not become victim to predators or starvation. The fox was housed over night for his big next day at his new home, Willowbrook Wildlife Center. A wildlife rehabilitation center for injured or orphaned DuPage wildlife species. Then his ill fate struck again. Because his rare color, Willowbrook Wildlife Center was unwilling to take him noting that he was half silver fox and silver fox are not native to DuPage County despite a silver fox not being its own species but a rare color phase of the red fox, all under the scientific name Vulpes vulpes and having no change in taxonomy despite what color phase the fox may be.
Thankfully Animals for Awareness cared more for the animals well being then a color variation. Kim from Animals for Awareness took the fox in with open arms and had him immediately taken to a veterinarian. The fox was found to be in good health yet has 4 broken bones in his left leg from possibly being struck by a car.
