how can i tell the diff between sweet, gothic, classical, punk ect lolita?
1) Sweet: although there's a big difference in the way it looks from a few years ago (very simple) and what it looks like now (prints), sweet lolita still uses pastels as the main colorway. Often times, a sweet lolita item may have a black colorway, but if the print design has a child-like theme such as candies, desserts, and stuff animals, it would be considered sweet lolita (albeit, some people like to dub it as "bittersweet" lolita). Another way of distincting sweet from classic lolita is the silhouette. Lolita Fashion is recognizable by its bell shaped skirt, and sweet lolita often tends to involve a very fluffy, cupcake-like skirt. Sweet generally takes heavy inspirations from the decadent styles of the Rococo era (lots of lace, ruffles, and ribbons, for example). The idea is to look child-like.
2) Classic: Silhouette and color is a large factor when comparing classic and sweet lolita. Classic still has the poofy skirt, but it's generally a minimal poof (A-line shape). Classic also uses pastels, but they're generally muted. Rich colors like burgandy/wine, chocolate, and mauve are also used. Classic seems to be heavily inspired by the daily outfits of the Victorian era (of a rich lady of course!), so there's less lace (sometimes no lace at all) and other frills. If there are any prints, they're typically floral or wallpaper inspired. The idea is to look mature and elegant.

3) Gothic: Gothic Lolita can have a very poofy-cupcake skirt or a minimal poof if the wearer desires. Although the main colorway is black, often times other colors like red or purple is incorporated. Typical motifs and prints are crosses, cathedrals, and castles. Basically putting it, it is taking inspirations from Western Gothic styles and mourning Victorian gowns, but in a lolita silhouette.
4) Punk: not to be confused with actual punk fashion, it is basically that put with the typical lolita silhouette, and more cutesty. (Distressed) tartans are typically seen as well as stompy boots (rocking horse shoes are quite popular), and mismatching patterns (example: fishnet tights and striped socks).
