The Purple Cap has been quite a Hit in Denmark
The Copenhagen Fashion Week is held twice a year in Denmark, with all the fashion elite and gurus and editors of fashion magazines putting full attendance. The event is said to embody pomp, opulence and grandeur. It is said to be the stage to demonstrate the best there is in clothing.
It usually starts with a market week, 3 huge fairs organized at the Bella Centre, Fashion Shows at the City Hall and shows and events all over town. These are a couple of fashion festivals when Copenhagen revels in the attention brought by shows, validating its position as an equally important avenue in fashion. Consumers, citizens and tourists alike welcome and celebrate fashion in the best of spirits.
The designers see this as a great opportunity to mix tastes and display new concepts. They can often be seen mixing old themes with new ideas and forming a nice creative concoction. One such display some time back at Copenhagen was academic regalia. To the surprise of many, the designers had gone to the extent of making the cat walkers wear Fanny Packs with formals. To add more precision to show, the Purple Cap was teamed with a modified graduation dress with models strutting down the ramp and back with utmost élan.
The move was so out-of-the-blue it even left Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley perplexed. Nobody expected a purple cap with academic regalia, a combination that another day would have looked odd. Much to the dismay of the ‘wise ones', it looked chic. It made a lot of sense. It was a fashion tryout that succeeded, giving the genre another option.
The designers basically tried to reinforce the notion that fanny packs were not an obsolete fashion accessory. The purple cap shimmered during twilight, worn with complementing shades that made it look even better or perhaps the best fit that could be teamed up with the attire.
The aftermath of that event was something that went out of hand. Close to 1600 exhibitors and 2800 branded collections have since come forth, with many designers showing a keen interest in including the purple cap in their repertoire and making it a part of their show. The 40 odd shows that happen twice a year during the fashion week now has the fanny packs being actively used by niche designers, who love the thrill they get by mixing the caps with other apparel.
