How can a character be too realistic?
When I posted a question about one of my characters, someone told me that my character was too realistic. I am just wondering, how can my character be too realistic? He is a person, so shouldn't he have qualities that make him realistic?

Characters should be compelling and mostly realistic. However characters they are too realistic are in a sense overly bland. Mark Twain once said that reality was more fantasy than fiction. That is true. Your character can't be too "real" but he can be too mundane. If you feel that your character is too "real" put him in a situation that is "unreal" that is often a plot device used to keep the story interesting. I remember speaking with Stewart O'Nan, an author who researchers his characters extremely deeply. He does everything from decided what his character's like in music, religion to their favorite days of the week. Real can mean deep which is something that you want. One thing to remember though is that a character is just a piece of the story. And with any story that you write you should have an "ideal reader" in mind. This is something described in Stephen King's "On Writing". If you have protagonist you will want him either liked, sympathetic such as Beowulf or dislike but interesting, like House most of the time. In conclusion, well, you can make your character as real as you think he can be. As long as he or the situation he is in is interesting. For what is the point in writing something boring?
