Just opened and tasted a red Cote du Rhone. A sharp taste hit my tongue first. Like seltzer. What is it?
I just opened a presumably good 2005 Seguret, a Cote du Rhone. On my first sip I could taste some great flavors and character but the immediate sensation on my tongue was almost like a burning, or the sharp, effervescent sensation when you sip seltzer. Can anyone explain what this is? Does it mean the wine is off? or young? or just needs to breathe?

It may just need to breathe-let it sit in the glass for a hour and try again (suggested by one reviewer in link). Everyone has a different opinion of any wine, but especially a blend such as Cote du Rhone. One reviewer noted "A good acid level makes the palate more lively than anticipated". Maybe that is what you are tasting.
