Ah, candy. Who doesn't love it? The number one guilty pleasure across the world, it's hard to find a person who doesn't satiate their cravings with a candy bar from time to time, if not more than they ought to. Candy may have been deified by Roald Dahl's famous book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it was truly worshipped by an actor named Gene Wilder, whose movie adaptation of Dahl's story instantly became a cult classic when it hit screens.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, as the film was called, was recently remade with Johnny Depp in Wilder's role, proving that the film, and the world's love of candy itself, aren't going anywhere. Candy itself has a bit of a magical quality. Forget the euphoric effects of chocolate — a good candy bar can set anyone on fire with happiness! Colorful, creative, imaginative and delicious, there's really nothing candy can't do. Not a big candy eater? Rest assured that you're missing out. Here are the top ten candy bars of all time.
Number one, of course, is the ever-popular Hershey Bar. Known as "The Great American Chocolate Bar," Hershey Bars are so famous that an entire theme park has sprung up in their honor. You can visit Hershey Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey bars, which are a bit cheaper to make than other types of chocolate, are known for their brick-shaped forms. You can break off each piece of the bar as a separate brick. European chocolate bars often don't offer this functionality, instead presenting themselves as one smooth chocolate bar.
Hershey Bars are available in many varieties these days. You'll find Milk Chocolate, Milk Chocolate with Almonds, Dark Chocolate, Cookies N' Crème, Symphony bars, Mr. Goodbars, and Krackel bars. The Hershey bar was the first mass-produced chocolate bar in the United States, and since being released in 1894, has managed to stay on top. If that's not number one, what is?
Number two has to go to the beloved Peppermint Pattie, a decidedly low-fat candy option that features dark chocolate with a deliciously mint-flavored center. Peppermint Patties are great for those who want to eat candy but don't want lots of empty calories, because they've got 70 percent less fat than the average candy bar. That makes them a popular alternative to the average candy bar, as many a woman (and man) around the world is consistently watching her weight.
In Europe, the most popular candy bar brand by far, which comes in at number three on the countdown, is the beloved Cadbury Bar. Cadbury Bars are almost as old as Hershey Bars – they went on sale in the United Kingdom way back in 1905. The company has grown into an empire of sorts. During Easter time, their eggs and mini-eggs fly off shelves at grocery stores and pharmacies around the world. Cadbury Bars are known for having a higher portion of milk than the average chocolate bar, which is why they were first referred to as Dairy Milk bars. The name stuck, and people now think of Cadbury as perfectly creamy chocolate.
Coming in at number four is the totally sticky but ooey gooey and delicious Charleston Chew bar. A nostalgic candy of sorts, Charleston Chews have been topping the list since 1922. These vanilla-flavored chewy candies are great straight from the wrapper, but many an admirer has enjoyed them frozen. Charleston Chews also come in Strawberry and Chocolate filling flavors, but it's the vanilla one that's the most well known and deserving of the number four spot.
For number five, who can forget Tootsie Rolls? While not technically a bar, these chewy chocolate candies are a favorite across the country. Slightly addictive and known for their ability to stick to your teeth, Tootsie Rolls first debuted in 1896, and were the first penny candy to be individually wrapped – quite the claim to fame! They were created by an immigrant to the US who was looking for a candy business he could start in New York City. The catch? He wanted a candy that wouldn't melt in the heat! That's where Tootsie Rolls began. Even today, these delicious candies won't ever melt on you.
Number six goes to another well-known favorite: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Chocolate and peanut butter have always been a winning combination, but Reese's is the only candy company to truly do it right.
For numbers seven through ten, we're going classic candy. Who can forget Mallo Cups, Sugar Daddies, Cowtails and Good & Plenties?
