`The 39 Steps` - a Good Take on Hitchcock????
Maria Aitken is an interesting actress who has never really done enough. Curiously, she is an even more interesting director. Her `take` on `The 39 Steps` (which is more Hitchcock than Buchan) employs the technique of farce. When first seeing the play at the Tricycle theatre I wondered about this. But having seen it last nite the I think I understand.
It is like the whole play is wrapped around that `cartoon` scene in `North by Northwest` where the US delegate to the UN, when talking with Cary Grant, ends up with a knife in his back.
The whole scene is pure Technicolor. The dynel wigs very blonde. The clothes very loud. And the take. The movements. Staccato. Exaggerated. Only `Hitch` could have conceived of it.
And this is what Aitken wraps the whole play around. That sort of caricature and farce.
Very, very clever. On many levels.
The 39 steps is a first rate book , written when Hitchcock was still listening to his mother barking.
Read the book and yearn for a better but bygone age.
A good book is nothing to do with actors or producers who are only parasites on the authors back.
